Lead, Follow or Get Out of the Way

Admit it.  There are people in your life that are born leaders.  Wherever they go, they command a crowd and whenever the speak, the masses listen.  You may not agree witht their tactics - intimidation, manipulation, bribery, arrogance - but you cannot argue they fact that they lead and others follow.  And then there are those that lead by example, never demanding to be heard and always in the background.  They, too, lead and others follow.  Whichever style of leadership, it is effective one way or another.  During our reading of Hurston's novel, we had a great discussion today about both leadership styles.

This is one of my favorite parts of the novel.  Janie, the protagonist, finally realizes how domineering her husband is and she finally speaks up for herself.  It is quite a turning point because it starts her down the road to discovering her true self.  I know, that sounds like something right from Sparknotes.com but it's true.  And I can't wait for my students to read on and discover where she ends up next.

  1. There are always going to be leaders in everyones lifes. whether we like it or not. It just isn't possible for everyone to be a leader. there is no way that people can all be leaders. nd besides some people do not want or have the personality to lead people and take control. There are a lot of people who do not hve the courage to take control of people. Its is just the way the world is and it is most likely not gonna change.

  2. In every person I believe there is a leader. A leader of their own kind though. They lead their own life everyday. Some can lead other people with them, and others can only lead themselves. Maybe if the leaders were to take a break, the quiet, silent leaders may step-up and there would be a change. Maybe all it takes to be a leader is confidence.

  3. Thats not necessarily true, everyone is a leader in their own way by leading their life. At some point or another everyone is asked to be a leader, it doesnt have to be a direct postion of authority, but we are all leaders. For example, if we take the iniative to do something without being asked, then are we not leaders?

  4. In some way, shape, or form everyone is a leader. Well at least everyone has the ability to be a leader if they so choose. Some people choose not to be leaders, if that is what they want that is ok. For the longest time Janie choose not to be a leader, but once she got up the courage to be a leader she turned into one. At times it takes a lot of courage to be a leader and I think that Janie just had trouble finding that courage at first.

  5. Yes, I think it is very true that there are some leaders who take charge and some who sit back and lead by example. I also agree that everyone has potential to be a leader. However, the best leaders are the ones who listen to the advice and ideas of others. To be a good leader you have to know what the wants and needs of the people are.

  6. I agree but also disagree I think anyone can choose to be a leader, but may not want to be one. A leader isn't someone who necessarily leads someone else or a group of people but someone who decides to stand up for what they believe in. To live a life in the way they have chosen. Each individual person is a leader in their own way.
