Let the Games Begin

Good stuff in class today.  According to our online poll, the majority of readers approve of Janie's relationship with Tea Cake and think she deserves the happiness and fun she's experiencing.  Quiz scores were great.  Looks like kids are keeping up with the reading and enjoying the story thus far.

You've been introduced to this blog so now start your comments!  Remember, you need to post at least one by midnight next Friday.  Here are some things to ponder and discuss:
  • What is the difference between mourning and grief?
  • How does Tea Cake endear himself to Janie?  Does she buy it?
  • Janie's hair once again figures into the story.  How?
  • Why does she push Tea Cake away from her?  Is that weakness?
  • Do you think this relationship will last?  Explain.

  1. Whats is the purpose of the hair? It seems like it's both strenght and weakness thats she tries to stray from Tea Cake. Because, tring to avoid getting hurt is, in a way, a weakness. Although, it is strenght that she is able to stand up for herself and not be thrown around.

  2. What is the difference between mourning and grief? Mourning is when the act of grief and grief is the intense emotional feeling of losing a loved one. Mourning is almost like faking it, you don't really mean it. Grief is real, and it can change a person emotionally where as mourning cannot.

  3. I think that the relationship between Janie and Tea Cake will last. Janie thought that Tea Cake stole her money and left her, she also thought that he cheated on her with Nunkie. Janie believed the story that Tea Cake told her about why he had to take the money and she took his word that he didn't cheat on her.

  4. Why does she push Tea Cake away from her? When Janie first met Tea Cake she was hesitant to let herself far fall for him. I think this hesitation was because of the opinions of the towns people, and her dead grandma. People kept telling Janie it was irresponsible to enter into a relatioship with Tea Cake, but she couldn't control her feelings. I don't think this is a weakness of Janie's, I think it's a strength. Janie was just playing it safe to protect herself from getting hurt.

  5. Janie's hair always had to be tied up when she was out in front of people at the store. Joe didn't want any other man looking at it and finding it attractive. After his death, Janie burns all of her head rags. This act signifies a new beginning for her. A life of not having to live by anyones rules but her own.

  6. I agree with what Tiffany had to say. She is becoming a more powerful person. She is no longer living behind the walls of Joe. She can now do new things that she never had a chance to do because of Joe. By letting her hair down, she is standing up for herself instead of representing Joe Starks.

  7. Whats the difference between mourning and grief? Mourning is being sad for a long period of time, going through a process of healing, and eventually healing what has been hurt inside. Grief is short term sadness a period of acceptance to move forward with your life.

  8. I do not think that the relationship between Janie and Tea Cake will last because the same thing is going to happen with Tea Cake as with Joe. Janie is going to realize that she is not happy and might "quit" him for it.

  9. I really hope for Janie and our sake that her and Teacakes relationship works out. I just hope that this "power" that Teacake looks for while beating Janie will not change how he treats her during the remainder of their relationship.

  10. I think that the difference between mourning and grief is simple. Mourning is the act of showing your sorrow for your loss, and grief is the emotion of loss. In Janie's case, she had neither grief nor was she mourning the death of Jody because in the end she didn't love him.

  11. Yes I believe the relationship will last because Janie has finally found a man that she has fun with. They do all kinds of things together and dont fight much. Janie does what she wants to and doesnt have anyone telling her what to do.

  12. Yes I think the relationship will last because Janie and Tea Cake actually have fun together. They play games and do lots of activities and when they fight, Tea Cake does not get agressive and hit Janie like Janie's past boyfriends. Janie will understand in the future that she has freedom with Tea Cake but not with the other two.

  13. I do not think the relationship will last for many reasons. I beleive Tea Cake will start to use all of Janie's money on pointless things, for example, Tea Cake took her money one morning and threw a party. Personally I think Tea Cake is using her for her money and only came back afterwards to steal the rest of her money.

  14. I dont think Janie and Tea cake will last. Janie doesn't have the best track record with men, she gives in too easily, and she conforms to whatever they want her to do.

  15. Tea Cake beat Janie. Thats not cool. I personally dont care if he makes her happy. The minute he raised that hand, he doomed himself to follow in the same path as Jody.
