Convenience or Sacrifice?

Sometimes I hate my gadgets.  As I look at my desk just now, there is the large desktop computer screen, iPad, smartphone, and flatscreen TV surrounding me.  And while I am blessed to have the use of such tools and have come to rely on them, I am annoyed at the same time.  Seems I cannot get away from notifications, calendar alerts, messages, and the glare of red and blue blinking indicator lights.  And my students are all the more obsessed with their screens.  So as we've finished 1984, I came across a slideshow about how technology may be contributing to laziness and lack of social skills, things we've discussed in the past few weeks during class.  It's interesting to see how our daily lives have become dependent on personal devices and information from outside sources in the name of convenience and personal preferences - but at what expense?

How Technology Makes Us Lazy

  1. I agree with you! It is cool to be surrounded by such gadgets and gizmos, but in the same breath, it is annoying to see that some can not live without such things right by their sides.

  5. I completely believe that the technology now is, making many kids and also adults lazy. i ask myself this question everyday. what is this generation coming to? its sad because so many people count on the technology now a days and don't even want to exercise, hang out with friends, or even do things in school such as, using the computer to find answers to homework, or to do there credits becasue they couldn't sit in a class and pay attention, also math all the calculators and other advices you have on the computer, phones, ipads, ect. we have became so depentdent on the technology that so many people woildn't know what to do without it and its a major problem.

  6. I completely agree! Most people today cannot go a day without using some sort of technology. Especially smart phones! People are becoming more lazy because technology basically does anything, and everything for you.

  7. Technology only makes you as lazy as you let it. There is nothing scary about using technology as its intended; its mostly a medium for entertainment, and no one is forcing you to use it. When things get scary, though, is when you think of the different viruses people can make. They have been around forever, being able to send infected emails to your friends, bog down your processor, or not let you get on entirely...but with the sudden rise for webcams for online schooling, making videos, and etc. many of these programs are able to access these microphones, and cameras. So long as people are careful with what they do, I think technology is great, and only getting better.

  8. I agree with you in that we are overwhelmed with technology in a way. I can see how it could contribute to society's lack of social skills. People need to eventually break away from it all, at least to some extent.

  11. I think that technology can be good to an extent. There are so many different apps and other things that help us do different things, soon people will just stop learning how to do the things.

  13. I also agree that technology has made us lazier as a whole. People can now do things without even leaving their homes. Some I think are for the better. There are advantages, like online classes, that I see no problem with and actually see it as a good thing for society. Some people can’t, for a number of reasons, physically stop what they are doing and go to class. It has helped many students get the classes they need done. However, the new technology where you can take a picture of your check and deposit it, is plain lazy and scary. Who would want that info circulating the web or phones? People just need to take a second look at what they are doing before they do it.

  14. Now a days technology has improved everyday life. It is amazing how much we can do at the push of a button, but I think there needs to be a line drawn. Society is becoming more and more dependent on different gadgets that we are all forgetting the basic principles drilled into us as children. Today, instead of kids learning how to write their ABCs they are now learning how to work a computer way better than adults. In my mind, it is kind of scary.

  15. Technology has helped alot of people in good ways and bad. It helps us with everydays task but it also makes us lazy. Sometimes we just need to do stuff for ourself. It does save lives everyday, our knew machines and ways of finding diseases and creating cures. There is many ways of looking at technology, we just cant have it take over our life.

  17. Not all people overuse technology like this. Online grocery shopping is so completely ridiculous. I love going to the grocery store! Also, it's still a treat to go on a vacation or to a concert every once and a while. It's less expensive to stay home and use technology to entertain ones self, but experiencing this live is always way more rewarding than seeing it from a couch.
